MERI-LAPIN HISTORIALLISET KIRKOT (HISTORICAL CHURCHES OF SEA LAPLAND)

Tämä monivaiheinen virtuaalikätkö esittelee Meri-Lapin alueen viisi merkittävää ja arkkitehtuuriltaan täysin erilaista kirkkoa. Kierros vie sinut halki historian: keskiaikaisesta harmaakivikirkosta 1600-luvun puukirkkoon, Engelin empiretyyliin sekä upeaan uusgoottilaiseen tiilikirkkoon. Reitti sisältää myös kaksi kansainvälisesti merkittävää tiedehistoriallista kohdetta.

Kätkön loggaamiseen sinun tulee vierailla kaikilla viidellä kirkolla ja suorittaa annetut tehtävät. Kierroksen pituus Tornion ja Kemin välillä on noin 30 kilometriä, ja se on helpointa kulkea autolla tai pyöräillen.

 Liitäthän loggaukseesi 5 kuvaa, joissa näkyy , kunkin kirkon ovenkahva ja lukko. Jokaisessa kuvassa tulee näkyä myös jokin sinulle kuuluva esine (esim. nimimerkkisi paperilla, GPS-laite tai peukalo) todisteena käynnistäsi.

3. Keminmaan uusi kirkko

HISTORICAL CHURCHES OF SEA LAPLAND

This multi-stage Virtual Cache introduces five architecturally unique and historically significant churches in the Sea Lapland area. The tour takes you through history: from a medieval stone church to a 1600s wooden church, Engel's Empire style, and a magnificent Neo-Gothic brick church. The route also includes two internationally important locations in scientific history.

To log this cache, you must visit all five churches and complete the given tasks. The route between Tornio and Kemi is about 30 kilometers long and is best traveled by car or bicycle.

Logging Task

Please include 5 photos in your log.

The photos must feature the door handle and lock of each church. To verify your visit, each photo must include something that belongs to you (for example: your GPS device, your thumb, or your geocaching nickname written on a piece of paper).

• BRIEF INTRODUCTIONS TO THE CHURCHES

• 1. Kemi Church

• Completed: 1902
• Style: Continental Neo-Gothic and National Romanticism (architect Josef Stenbäck).
• Description: Rising in the center of Kemi, this striking pink/rose-colored brick church draws inspiration from grand European cathedrals. This influence is visible in its soaring vaults, numerous small spires, and the massive, beautiful rose window positioned directly above the main entrance.

• 2. Keminmaa Old Church (St. Michael's Church)

• Completed: 1551–1553
• Style: Medieval greystone church.
• Description: Along with Alatornio, this is the northernmost medieval stone church in Finland and one of the last built before the Reformation. It is famous for its rare ceiling paintings from the 1680s and, most notably, for the naturally mummified body of Parson Nikolaus Rungius (d. 1629), which rests in a glass coffin beneath the church floor.

• 3. Keminmaa New Church

• Completed: 1827
• Style: Empire style cross church.
• Description: Built to replace the old stone church, which had become too small and drafty. This bright, white church was designed by Finland's most famous architect, Carl Ludvig Engel (best known for designing Helsinki's Senate Square). It forms a beautiful historical pair standing right across from the medieval old church.

• 4. Alatornio Church

• Completed: 1797
• Style: Neoclassical cross church (architect Jacob Rijf).
• Description: This massive church dominates the landscape on Pirkkiö Island, incorporating structural parts of an older medieval stone church. It is globally significant as its tower served as a measurement station in the Struve Geodetic Arc, which determined the size and shape of the Earth. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

• 5. Tornio Church (Hedvig Eleonora Church)

• Completed: 1686
• Style: 17th-century Caroline Baroque wooden church.
• Description: One of Finland's finest and best-preserved 17th-century wooden churches, named after the Queen of Sweden. The church is famous for its bell tower, which the French astronomer Pierre Louis Maupertuis used as a triangulation point during his expedition in 1736–1737 to prove that the Earth is flattened at the poles.
