Welcome to this well-loved park in the middle of Albuquerque. Take a seat on the bench and enjoy the vista of Buerquenos' well-loved Sandia Mountain. There is no physical cache here. Attempts to maintain a physical geocache at this site failed; the cache disappeared four times over 5 years.

The Netherwood Park neighborhood has a history going back to the 1890's when Albuquerque had only 4000 residents, four public schools, and a state university with only seven staff members. The neighborhood is located on land initially purchased by three teachers as an investment that they hoped would provide a measure of financial security. Ed Netherwood and his family moved to Albuquerque from Denver in 1908. The Netherwoods bought several hundred acres north of UNM because of the recomendation of Colonel D.K.B. Sellers. Sellers was a larger-than-life businessman and politician who influenced every Albuquerque real estate developer from 1906 to 1947. He is the man in the fedora standing next to the large "NOB HILL" sign in the 1937 photo you may have seen in shops in Albuquerque's Nob Hill area.
The Netherwoods died and time passed. In 1950 Albuquerque annexed about 3300 acres that included the Netherwood neighborhood. Only 15 - 20 homes were on the land at that time. Edward Schell was the only living Netherwood relative. He decided to move from Illinois to Albuquerque. He drew up a restrictive covenant that proclamed "no lot or part of a lot in Netherwood Park can be used for the sale of intoxicatin liquor, a slaughter house, junk yard, night club, skating rink, pool hall, or drive in theater. In 1962, with the help of donations from Netherwood residents, the City of Albuquerque created the beautiful park you are looking at now.
