Magdalena Abakanowicz należy do grona najwybitniejszych polskich artystek XX wieku.

Jej rzeźby do dziś zachwycają rozmachem, oryginalnością i siłą oddziaływania, pozostając jednym z najważniejszych osiągnięć polskiej kultury współczesnej.
Zadanie

Magdalena Abakanowicz is considered one of the most outstanding Polish artists of the 20th century. Her works can be found in museums and public spaces around the world, and Wrocław holds a special place on the map of her artistic legacy. It is here that one of the largest - and according to many sources, the largest - collections of her works is housed in the Four Domes Pavilion, a branch of the National Museum. Visitors can admire her famous Abakans as well as monumental sculptural ensembles such as Embryology, Backs, and Crowd.

Abakanowicz gained international recognition primarily through her so-called Abakans (named after her) - monumental, three-dimensional forms made of fibers and textiles. In the 1960s, these works revolutionized the art world. She demonstrated that textile art did not have to be limited to flat tapestries hanging on walls. Instead, she created huge, organic structures resembling cocoons, shells, plants, or mysterious living organisms, surrounding viewers and inviting them into their space.
Later in her career, the artist turned toward figurative sculpture. During this period, she created series depicting human figures, often without heads or faces. Works such as Backs, Crowd, and Seated Figures encouraged reflection on the fate of the individual, social relationships, and the experiences of the 20th century. Although the figures appear similar, each retains its own individuality, emphasizing the tension between collective identity and human uniqueness.
Magdalena Abakanowicz's significance in contemporary art is immense. She transcended the boundaries between sculpture, textile art, and spatial installation, inspiring generations of artists. Her works have been exhibited at the world's most prestigious exhibitions, and critics regard her as one of the most recognizable Polish artists in history.
In 2021, the Four Domes Pavilion organized the major retrospective exhibition Abakanowicz. Total, featuring hundreds of works and allowing visitors to follow nearly the entire artistic journey of the artist—from her textile experiments to her later sculptural creations.
While walking around the Four Domes Pavilion, visitors can also see the installation King Arthur's Knights. This group of monumental figures is made of stainless steel and stands as an impressive example of Abakanowicz's large-scale public art.
Another important work in Wrocław is Birds, located near the National Museum. These dynamic metal sculptures are among the artist's final creations. Their outstretched forms evoke wings and movement through space while maintaining the monumental scale and expressive power characteristic of Abakanowicz's work.
Thanks to the presence of these artworks, both residents and tourists can experience her art not only within museum galleries but also throughout the city itself.
Abakanowicz's work demonstrates that art can be beautiful, unsettling, and deeply thought-provoking at the same time. Her sculptures continue to captivate audiences with their scale, originality, and emotional impact, remaining among the most important achievements of contemporary Polish culture.
