Geocache Description:

Standing proudly at the foot of Queen Street, the Auckland Ferry Building has welcomed travellers by sea for more than a century. Opened in 1912, this elegant Edwardian-style building was designed as a statement piece — a clear message to those arriving by ferry that Auckland was a growing, confident city with its eyes firmly on the future.

At the time, the waterfront was the beating heart of Auckland. Ferries were the primary way people moved between the city and the growing suburbs across the harbour, and the Ferry Building served as Auckland’s main arrival and departure point. For many, this was their very first glimpse of the city — long before bridges, motorways, and GPS units made getting here much easier.

Built from reinforced concrete and finished with a pale sandstone-coloured façade, the Ferry Building was designed to be both practical and impressive. Its clock tower became an instant landmark, helping passengers keep track of ferry schedules and giving Auckland a waterfront timepiece that has become one of the city’s most recognisable features.

Over the decades, the building has witnessed enormous change. It has seen steam ferries replaced by modern catamarans, horse-drawn carts give way to buses and cars, and the waterfront evolve from a working port into a vibrant public space. It has also watched countless commuters rush past, tourists pause for photos, and the occasional geocacher slow right down and start looking up.

Today, the Ferry Building continues to serve its original purpose while standing as a reminder of Auckland’s maritime heritage. This virtual cache invites you to step out of the rush, take a closer look, note the time shown on the clock, does it match your phone/watch and appreciate a building that has quietly kept time — and welcomed arrivals — for over 100 years.
