La Cattedrale di Sant'Agata dedicata alla patrona della città, nonché vergine e martire, si trova nell'omonima piazza e rappresenta la costruzione religiosa più significativa di tutta la città. Costruita a partire dal 1094 dal re normanno Ruggiero d'Altavilla, fu più volte distrutta dai terremoti e dalle eruzioni vulcaniche. Alla sua fondazione ebbe un doppio ruolo di Chiesa e di Fortezza. Oggi svetta, maestosa, nella Piazza del Duomo, cuore della città.

Il Duomo di Sant'Agata fu costruito sopra le terme romane di Achille, proprio nel luogo del martirio di Sant'Agata nel 251. La cattedrale rappresenta il monumento più importante del centro storico di Catania poiché sintetizza le espressioni artistiche di nove secoli di storia. Si possono riconoscere tre "parti" in questo maestoso edificio: quella più antica, "normanna", nelle absidi e nelle cappelle laterali, quella "sveva" nelle basi di alcune colonne visibili nel pavimento, e quella "barocca", costituita dalle tre navate e dal prospetto su Piazza Duomo.

The Cathedral of Saint Agatha, dedicated to the patron saint of the city, as well as a virgin and martyr, is located in the square of the same name and is the most significant religious building in the entire city. Built in 1094 by the Norman king Roger II, it was destroyed several times by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. When it was founded, it had a dual role as a church and a fortress. Today it stands majestically in Piazza del Duomo, the heart of the city.

The Cathedral of Sant'Agata was built on top of the Roman baths of Achilles, on the very site of the martyrdom of Sant'Agata in 251. The cathedral is the most important monument in the historic center of Catania, as it synthesizes the artistic expressions of nine centuries of history. Three “parts” can be recognized in this majestic building: the oldest, “Norman” part in the apses and side chapels, the ‘Swabian’ part in the bases of some columns visible in the floor, and the “Baroque” part, consisting of the three naves and the façade on Piazza Duomo.
The cathedral can be visited free of charge.
