Geocache Description:

Yunlin Sugar Cane History #1: Railway Remnants

The Douliu Sugar Factory, located in Douliu City, Yunlin County, was once an essential hub of Taiwan's sugar industry. Established in 1912 during the Japanese colonial period, the Dai-Nippon Sugar Company initially operated the factory. The facility played a crucial role in sugar production, with a daily crushing capacity of 500 metric tons, later expanding to 1,600 metric tons before its closure in 1996. The sugar railway in Douliu was constructed to transport sugarcane from surrounding farms to the factory for processing. The narrow-gauge railway also connected with Taiwan's main north-south railway line (縱貫鐵路), facilitating the efficient distribution of refined sugar across the island. Over time, the railway system evolved, serving industrial needs and limited passenger transportation. However, by the late 20th century, as road transportation became dominant, the sugar railroads gradually fell out of use. The factory ceased sugar production in 1994, and all railway operations were eventually discontinued.

Today, remnants of the Douliu Sugar Factory's railway system serve as a historical and cultural heritage site. Some sections have been preserved, while others have been repurposed for urban development and tourism projects.

The Bamboo Creative Cultural Park opened on February 5, 2026 at the site of the former Douliu Sugar Cane Refinery. It has been a years-long restoration project to bring this area back to life. Here you can enjoy a walk through the park or enjoy some of the exhibitions set up inside the original refinery buildings.

Cache is a small beige/tan canister about the side of a soda can. A few small trinkets are inside. Feel free to leave one and take one.
