이곳 지하철역 안에서 우리는 세월의 흔적과 지질학적 격변이 만들어낸 아름다운 천연 석재를 만날 수 있습니다. 매끄럽게 연마된 이 슬라브는 단순한 장식재가 아니라, 수백만 년 전 지구의 활동을 기록하고 있는 퇴적암 의 한 종류입니다.
1. 각력암(Breccia)이란?
바닥의 암석은 각력암(Breccia)입니다. 흔히 '역암'과 혼동하기 쉽지만, 이 암석은 아주 특별한 형성 과정을 거칩니다. 각력암은 2mm 이상의 크고 각진 암석 파편(Clasts)들이 미세한 입자의 기질(Matrix)과 함께 굳어져 만들어집니다.
2. 역암 vs 각력암 (Conglomerate vs Breccia)
이 두 암석을 구분하는 핵심 키워드는 '원마도(Roundness)'입니다.
- 역암 (Conglomerate): 자갈이 강물이나 파도에 휩쓸려 멀리 이동하면서 모서리가 닳아 둥글게 변한 것입니다.
- 각력암 (Breccia): 암석이 깨진 후 멀리 이동하지 않고 그 자리에서 바로 쌓였을 때 형성됩니다. 자갈의 모서리가 날카롭고 각져 있는 것 이 특징입니다. 주로 산사태, 단층 활동, 또는 암벽 붕괴 현장 인근에서 만들어집니다.
3. 기질(Matrix)과 자갈(Clast)
연마된 슬래브 표면을 보면 큰 돌 조각들(자갈) 사이를 메우고 있는 더 고운 입자들을 볼 수 있습니다. 이것을 기질(Matrix)이라고 부릅니다. 이 기질이 천연 시멘트 역할을 하여 커다란 파편들을 단단하게 붙잡아 오늘의 암석을 완성했습니다.

Inside this subway station, we can encounter beautiful natural stone shaped by the passage of time and dramatic geological processes.This slab offers a unique window into high-energy geological events from millions of years ago.
1. What is Breccia?
Breccia (from the Italian word for "loose gravel" or "rubble") is a clastic sedimentary rock composed of large, angular fragments (clasts) larger than 2mm in diameter. The spaces between these sharp fragments are filled with a finer-grained "matrix" that acts as a natural cement, binding the rock together.
2. Breccia vs. Conglomerate
To a casual observer, Breccia looks very similar to its cousin, Conglomerate . However, the key difference lies in the Roundness of the fragments:
- Conglomerate: Contains rounded clasts. This indicates the rocks were transported a long distance by water (rivers or waves), wearing down the sharp edges over time.
- Breccia: Contains sharp, angular clasts. This tells us the fragments were deposited very close to their source. They didn't have time to be smoothed down. These usually form from landslides, cliff collapses, or fault zone movements.
3. Reading the Slab
By looking at this polished surface, we can identify:
- The Clasts: The large "chunks" of rock. Their variety in color and texture tells us which parent rocks were breaking apart.
- The Matrix: The "glue" (often silt, sand, or clay) that filled the gaps before the whole mass lithified (turned to stone).
[How to log]
- Observe the pebbles embedded in the slab. Are the edges of the pebbles generally sharp, or are they rounded and worn down? Based on your observations, did the materials that formed this rock travel a long distance from their origin, or were they deposited nearby?
- Is there a variety of colors and textures among the pebbles in the slab? (e.g., white marble-like, gray limestone-like, etc.) Based on this, try to infer whether different types of rocks were mixed when this rock was formed.
