The Maryland Society of Surveyors (MSS) Geocache Committee is having this Event cache to preview a GeoTrail where you will use your geocaching skills along with Benchmarking skills to find the many caches in this upcoming statewide trail.
We will go over, what is a Horizontal Control Mark, Vertical Control Mark, Triangulation Station, Azimuth, Reference Mark and of course a “Bench Mark.” You will need to know the differences to obtain a GeoCoin from the BILBY GeoTrail.
The BILBY (Basic Information to Locate Benchmarks Yourself) series is named after Jasper S. Bilby (1864-1949) whose invention drastically improved the way mapping was done in the early 1900’s. This Chief Signalman’s contribution to mapping, helped to create the network of surveys marks across the country which were used to layout the roads and infrastructure we use today.
