Geocache Description:

Tit for Tat #2

It’s now my turn to contribute to the Tit for Tat series started by horror.fan.jm. We were both lamenting how far we had to travel to try to fill our multi calendars so we decided to take matters into our own hands and publish some ourselves!

In the words of horror.fan.jm: we came up with the idea that for every multi one of us hides the other would hide one as well, a little tit for tat! We hope this series will catch on and reignite everyone's love for multis and maybe even encourage others to hide their own. Each of these multis will be short, simple and have a check sum.

The Belmont Lookout Tower

Let’s have a fourth go at placing a cache in this location!

The first was GC2JGZQ, hidden in Nov 2010 and archived in May 2017. Bunjil reminded me the next one was GC944PN, hidden in Sept 2021 and archived in Oct 2022. Then came GCAD4T6, hidden in Aug 2023 and archived in July 2024. My boys tell me that the local kids sometimes like to climb the tower at night (ahem, not them of course - it’s permanently closed as the structure isn’t to code and is not deemed safe) so maybe do this one during the day and let me know if I need to CITO the area at any time.

I found both previous caches and often walk along this road during the day and have never had any dramas so I feel this is a safe location to place a cache.

Below is the information about the tower that I lifted from fisherfamfive’s archived cache page. They sourced it from vhd.heritage.vic.gov.au/search/nattrust_result_detail/66932

The Belmont lookout tower, built in 1923, is of State historical, architectural and social significance:- as the oldest-known wooden lookout tower in Victoria; as the last of the wooden lookout towers which once dotted the Dandenong Ranges, an area of particular significance in Victoria's bushfire history; and for its associations with Dandenongs' residential development, tourism, and fire safety provisions.

As the last of the wooden lookout towers which once dotted the Dandenong Ranges, an area of particular significance in Victoria's bushfire history; and for its associations with Dandenongs' residential development, tourism, and fire safety provisions.

The tower is part of the history of the urbanisation of the Dandenongs, particularly after the First World War, when rising car ownership enabled subdivision of beauty spots beyond Melbourne's rail network. It was built in 1923 as a land selling feature for the Mount Upwey Estate, one of the Dandenongs' largest subdivisions, to provide potential purchasers with panoramic views of the Estate's beautiful setting.

The tower also became a vital component in the community's continuing struggle with the fire menace. It was used as a fire spotting lookout for the Upwey Fire Brigade, which was formed in 1918, the first of the Dandenong townships to set up a brigade.

The cache:

At the posted coordinates, you will be standing in front of a sign:

ABC = The Lot number that was assigned to Beauty Point

D.E = The height of the tower

F = The number of rivets along the top of the sign minus the number of rivets along the bottom

To the right of the Belmont old wooden tower is a TV transmission tower and a green building owned by TXA Australia. Look at the top, larger sign on the door of the green building.

G = 1st digit on the TX Australia address: G2a Belmont Avenue, Upwey

HJK =  The first three digits on the phone number, excluding the area code: (03) HJK1 1052
