π¬π§ Stylolites are a type of rock deformation visible in some sedimentary rocks, especially limestones. When a rock block is subjected to high pressure during its formation, it adjusts by deforming, shrinking in the direction of greatest pressure and expanding in the direction of least pressure.
Stylolites most often appear as wavy βtoothedβ lines running across the rock body. They are indicators of pressure-induced deformation occurring where (typically carbonate) rock dissolves, and impurities form a dark pressure seam. Stylolites are best observed in the purest limestones with high CaCO3 content.
Irregularities in the shape of stylolites can be caused by the presence of more resistant minerals, such as quartz or pyrite, which resist or deflect the rockβs dissolution.
Fluids carrying dissolved minerals penetrate cracks called tension cracks. These cracks form perpendicular to the stylolites, i.e., in the direction of applied pressure, and are later filled with material transported by these fluids.

π¬π§ When observing stylolites, we most commonly encounter the following direction types -
[1] Horizontal stylolites form parallel or nearly parallel to the bedding of sedimentary rocks, mainly limestones and dolomites. In rock sections, they appear as irregular, saw-toothed, or wavy lines, often darker than the surrounding rock because they concentrate clay, organic material, or iron oxides. These stylolites form during slow compaction of the rock under the pressure of overlying layers, without significant influence from tectonic forces.
[2] Inclined (or oblique) stylolites are arranged at an angle to the bedding. They occur not only in sedimentary rocks but also in igneous and metamorphic rocks. Their irregular, wavy patterns reflect more complex stress conditions in the rock. They often form in areas affected by tectonic displacement or bending of layers. In sections, they appear as slanted, darker bands or zones, which may be partially filled with calcite, clay, or other minerals.
[3] Vertical stylolites are oriented perpendicular to the rock bedding. They appear as vertical or slanted teeth or cracks that can cut across multiple layers at once. They form under pressure acting perpendicular to the sedimentary layers, often associated with tectonic deformation or regional stress. In rock thin sections or cuts, they can create pronounced jagged lines cutting across otherwise horizontal layers.

In the case of this type of rock, it is limestone.Β Limestone is formed from the accumulation of lime mud and /or the accumulation of the shells of ancient sea creatures. Over millenia, the sediment is compacted and eventually stone forms. During the process of diagenesis, minerals precipitate out of water in the sediment, these then help to act as cement binding sediment together.Β
Stylolites can be filled with cementing material, such as calcite, and also insoluble materials such as clay can be left in stylolites as part of the diagenesis process. The calcite can appear blocky at times, with clay having now been transformed into rock can appear tan coloured.Β
Stylolites can be said to be barriers to fluids moving through rocks, but theyΒ can also be conduits for fluids to move through, and they can also be opened by tectonic action.Β Due to tectonic forces, at times hot mineral saturated fluid can be forced or circulate through cracks, and weaknesses in rocks. They can also circulate through stylolites, and as a result once the fluid has cooled, crystals can form in the form of quartz and other minerals.Β
