π¬π§ At the starting coordinates, you will find Juparana gneiss, a pink-hued gneiss that is mainly quarried in southern India, particularly in the Ramanagara district of Karnataka.
Gneiss is a strongly metamorphosed rock, meaning it has been altered by higher temperatures and pressures than rocks like schist. It forms when granite or certain sedimentary rocks undergo intense metamorphism. One of its key features is foliation, where minerals are arranged in alternating layers of different composition. Unlike slate or schist, gneiss does not split easily along these layers, because less than half of its minerals are aligned in thin sheets. Its foliation is coarse and often subparallel, so the layers vary in thickness and can be interrupted.
Gneiss is commonly linked to major tectonic and mountain-building events, where felsic igneous rocks are buried deeply and exposed to high pressure and temperature from nearby magmatic activity and tectonic forces. Some of the oldest rocks on Earth, such as those in western Greenland, are gneisses over 3.5 billion years old. The term βgneissβ originates from Old German and means βbrightβ or βsparkling.β

π¬π§ Metamorphic minerals are minerals that form under the influence of high pressure, high temperature, or chemically active fluids during the metamorphism of pre-existing rocks. These changes occur deep within the Earth's crust and can alter the original mineral composition and structure of the rock without melting it. Newly formed minerals are stable under the changed conditions and contribute to the formation of metamorphic rocks such as schist, gneiss, or marble.
Common metamorphic minerals include biotite, amphibole, garnet, staurolite, kyanite, sillimanite, and chlorite. Some of these, called index minerals, are especially useful for determining the degree of metamorphism. For example, the presence of kyanite indicates high pressure, while sillimanite forms at higher temperatures. These minerals often grow into larger and more prominent crystals than in the original rock due to recrystallization processes.
The orientation of platy minerals, such as mica, leads to structures seen in rocks like slate and schist. In contrast, non-metamorphosed (non-foliated) rocks, such as marble or quartzite, form from rocks with uniform mineral composition and undergo recrystallization without significant directional pressure.

π¬π§ Metamorphism of rocks is a geological process in which the mineral composition and structure of the original rock are changed due to high temperature, pressure, or chemically active fluids. It occurs in the solid state, during which the components of the rock are rearranged and new minerals are formed, and it can affect both igneous and sedimentary rocks. There are three main types of metamorphis.
[X] Contact metamorphism occurs around magmatic bodies and is primarily influenced by high temperature. The metamorphic effect decreases with distance from the contact, forming metamorphic zones called contact aureoles.
[Y] Regional metamorphism is associated with mountain-building processes, during which pressure and temperature transform rocks over large areas. It usually occurs during continental collisions, when continental tectonic plates collide and vast masses of rock are buried into deeper parts of the crust.
[Z] Dynamic metamorphism is a geological process of rock transformation caused mainly by directed pressure and deformation, with a lesser influence of temperature. It occurs in tectonic zones and is driven by high pressure that crushes rocks and promotes their recrystallization.
