πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Tufa belongs to freshwater limestones that form through chemical processes in mineral waters containing dissolved carbon dioxide. When this water emerges from underground to the surface, a change in pressure causes carbon dioxide to be released, which leads to the precipitation of calcium carbonate. This material gradually settles and creates characteristic limestone structures.

Tufa most commonly forms around springs, streams, and small cascades, where flowing water moves around stones, plant roots, or fallen twigs. These objects act as natural substrates on which tufa is gradually deposited and grows.

A characteristic feature of tufa is its very light and porous structure, which gives it a sponge-like appearance. Because of this structure, impressions of plant remains or shells of small animals, such as snails or insects, are often preserved within it. In some places, tufa forms extensive terraces and thick layers, locally reaching several meters in thickness.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Tufa deposits can be classified according to the environment in which they are deposited. One of the most commonly used classifications was proposed by H. M. Pedley in 1990, who distinguished several basic types of tufa related to aquatic environments.

(a) Spring tufa forms at points where groundwater emerges at the surface or where water gradually seeps out. These accumulations show a wide variety of forms, ranging from mineral-saturated wetland areas to well-developed rims and margins resembling sinter.

(b) Tufa in braided channels develops directly within the active riverbed. Flowing water promotes the formation of characteristic limestone bodies, especially oncoids, which are spherical structures created by the progressive coating of small grains with layers of calcium carbonate.

(c) Cascade accumulations are deposited in sections with a steeper gradient, such as waterfalls and small steps. The accelerated flow and intense aeration of the water strongly enhance calcium carbonate precipitation, making tufa formation most pronounced in these settings.

(d) Barrier (dam) tufa forms as natural limestone dams across the stream. These structures can reach several meters in height and often contain admixtures of clastic and organic material, such as fragments of branches, leaves, or other plant remains.
