Geocache Description:

History Lesson:

Founded in 1876-1878 by J. A. Potts,  Pottsboro, TX, began as a railroad town in Grayson County along the Missouri, Kansas and Texas tracks. Incorporated in 1885, it grew as a local agricultural center despite major fires in the 1890s and 1920s. The 1940s brought significant transformation via the construction of nearby Perrin Field and Lake Texoma.

Key Historical Details:

  • Founder & Name: Established by James A. Potts, who provided land for the railroad right-of-way.
  • Early Growth: The town incorporated on June 19, 1885, serving as a hub for the surrounding rural area.
  • Challenges: Serious fires in 1892, 1923, and 1924 caused major damage to the business district.
  • Economic Drivers: The construction of Perrin Army Air Field (1941) and the Denison Dam (1944) created significant economic growth and boosted the population.
  • Population Growth: From just a few hundred residents for much of the early 20th century, the city has grown to over 2,400 by 2020, partly driven by its proximity to Lake Texoma and the expanding Sherman-Denison area.

Today, Pottsboro is characterized as a residential community with a suburban feel and strong public schools.
