In the spring of 1994, with a loud blast, the “Three Incense Sticks” city sculpture, once a symbol of Foshan’s three major industries of textiles, ceramics, and electronics, was directionally demolished. This was not merely a simple dismantling; it was the curtain call of an era.
On the original site, a grand transformation project unfolded: a three-dimensional sunken square rose from the ground, cleverly separating pedestrian and vehicle traffic. On the surface, the five-way roundabout carried a constant flow of vehicles, while below, a slow-traffic system allowed pedestrians and non-motorized vehicles to pass through at their own pace.
To this day, the Chengmentou Sunken Square remains a vital north-south transportation artery in the downtown area of Chancheng, as well as a key hub safeguarding the prosperity of the Zumiao commercial district.
