“Into the Mystic” was written and recorded by Van Morrison in 1969 and released on his 1970 album Moondance. Morrison has said the song reflects his memories of growing up near the water in Belfast, with the imagery of foghorns and ship bells drawn directly from those experiences. Over time, it’s become one of his most enduring songs, often interpreted as both deeply personal and quietly spiritual.
We were caching with the wind
Also younger than the sun
Before this little hide was won
As we searched hard for this MISTic
Look around, hear seekers sigh
Scan the limbs and search the sky
Let your instincts guide your eye
Into the MISTic
Yeah when that GPS drifts close
I will know I’m almost home
Yeah when that arrow starts to slow
I gotta feel it
I don’t have to fear it
And I wanna rock that caching soul
Just like way back in the days of old
Then quietly we will unfold
Into the MISTic
When that signal starts to fade
You know I’m getting close
Yeah when that reading jumps around
I gotta trust it
I don’t have to doubt it
And I wanna rock that caching soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And together we will find
This very MISTic
Come on, friend
Too late to stop now
