“Octopus’s Garden” was written by Ringo Starr after a conversation with a boat captain who told him how octopuses collect stones and shells to make protective spaces on the ocean floor. Inspired by that idea, Ringo wrote the song as a gentle fantasy about escaping stress and finding a safe, welcoming place to belong – much like geocaching. It’s one of the rare Beatles songs written and sung by Ringo. This cache is our tribute cache.
I’d like to be
Out caching free
In this Octopus Garden
In the shade
I’d like to hide
A cache outside
In this Octopus Garden
In the shade
I’d ask my friends
To come and spend
This Octopus’s Garden with me
I’d like to be
Under the tree
In this Octopus’s Garden
In the shade
We would be here while others are near
In our little hideaway beneath the leaves
Using our minds as the moment unwinds
In an Octopus’s Garden of a tree
We would search and scan around
Because we know it can be found
I’d like to be under the tree
In this Octopus’s Garden
In the shade
We would shout and look about
At the branches reaching out
Oh what joy for every girl and boy
Knowing this little cache is safe
We would be so happy, you and me
To sign this log book TFTC
I’d like to be
Out caching free
In this Octopus Garden
With you
