N1 Dead End

This is the old N1, the National road from Dublin to Belfast which passed through Dundalk town. It was the main road when traveling north of Dundalk, to the Cooley Peninsula, Newry and beyond until the early nineties when another bridge and the inner relief road were constructed. Later in 2006 the newly built M1 motorway bypassed the town completely and is the main road north today. The old N1 road now comes to an abrupt stop at a dead end where the rest of the road was incorporated in to the Ballymascanlon Roundabout. Cycle paths are all that remain here on this once very busy main Dublin/ Belfast route.
