Geocache Description:

You are welcome to join us for a Geocaching Event on Mount Roskill to celebrate the Autumn Equinox!

The Autumn Equinox in New Zealand is the day when day and night are almost exactly the same length, marking the beginning of autumn.

In New Zealand, the autumn equinox usually happens around 20–21 March each year.

This year, the autumn equinox (or March equinox) in Auckland, New Zealand, is on Saturday, March 21, at 3:46 am NZDT.

What happens on this day?

  • The Sun is directly above the Earth’s equator.

  • Day and night are nearly equal (about 12 hours each).

  • After this date, days become shorter and nights become longer as winter approaches.

Because New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere, its seasons are opposite to countries in the Northern Hemisphere. So when it’s autumn in New Zealand, it’s spring in places like Europe or North America.

You can earn one souvenir by attending this event.(*)

* This equinox, celebrate the changing season and earn the souvenir by finding and logging any geocache, Event, or Adventure Lab® Location March 19–22, 2026.
