Site Introduction
Fumeimon (“Closed Gate”) is an important entrance gate leading into the Honmaru within Okayama Castle. It is positioned at the base of a stone stairway and was designed as a yagura-mon (turret gate), a structure type known for strong defensive capability. In everyday use, people normally entered through a northern passage instead, so this gate was usually kept shut; this is the origin of its name, which literally means “the gate that does not open.”
While architecturally modest, the stones used here provide an excellent opportunity to observe natural geological features preserved within building material.
Granite in the castle
The stones used in this wall are primarily granite, an intrusive igneous rock that forms deep underground from slowly cooling magma. Because of this slow cooling process, mineral crystals have time to grow large enough to be visible to the naked eye. Typical minerals present in granite include quartz, feldspar, and mica.
Dykes and Veins
Some stones at this site display lighter-colored bands cutting across the host granite. These bands formed after the granite itself had already solidified and therefore represent later geological events.

Some bands form when molten rock intrudes into fractures and solidifies; these are known as dykes. Others form when mineral-rich hot fluids move through cracks and deposit crystals; these are called veins. Although similar in appearance, they originate from different geological processes. Dykes record igneous activity, while veins record hydrothermal activity.

Recognizing the differences between them helps geologists reconstruct the sequence of events that affected a rock body.
