Mitchel Field AFB once covered about 1,117 acres of land, and now only a fraction of about 108 acres are left. The Air Force base had flying fields, runways, and taxiways and buildings. With the devlopment of Long Island, and the closure of the base in 1961, almost all of the runways were destroyed to make way for new buildings, parking lots, and roadway for cars. There are however, still some remnants of the original air strip left, if you know where to look. The virtual coordinates of this cache was once part of the original airstrip. In 2021, Nassau County opened a new building near the virtual coordinates. Despite the construction, the curved shape of the original remnants of the airstrip remain, as shown on Google Maps.
The virtual coordinates listed on this cache page does have some movie history significance. In the 1972 movie, "The Godfather", they shot the toll booth scene where "Sonny "Corleone" was violently murdered by multiple gunfire here. They made the area look like the toll booth plaza, and production cost were $100,000, making it as the most expensive scene in the film. The camera was shot low to the ground, and large billboards were in the background to hide tall buildings.
