What’s a whirligig? You’ll find the answer in Wilson.
Whirligigs are large, moving sculptures made from recycled metal, paint, and shiny reflectors. They spin, flash, and chime in the wind. Wilson native and farm machinery repairman turned folk artist Vollis Simpson began making his collection in the early 1980s as he approached retirement. Simpson was renowned for working on his collection almost everyday until he passed in 2013 at the age of 94. You can see 30 of these amazing whirligigs year-round at the nearby Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park.
