#099 Dzień Cichociemnych - Pamięć o spadochroniarzach AK

Pamięć o Cichociemnych spadochroniarzach Armii Krajowej celebrowana jest w Polsce w lutym i maju. W lutym obchody koncentrują się wokół daty 15 lutego, stanowiącej rocznicę operacji „Adolphus” z 1941 roku, kiedy to dokonano pierwszego zrzutu skoczków do okupowanego kraju we wsi Dębowiec. W czasie II wojny światowej do Polski zrzucono 316 cichociemnych, a ostatni skok w historii formacji miał miejsce 27 grudnia 1944 roku.

1. Ilu cichociemnych łącznie zrzucono do okupowanej Polski w toku działań wojennych?

2. Podaj nazwę operacji, podczas której w lutym 1941 roku przeprowadzono pierwszy zrzut skoczków.

3. W którym dniu grudnia 1944 roku wykonany został ostatni skok w historii formacji cichociemnych?

#099 The Day of the Silent and Unseen

The memory of the Home Army’s ‘Silent and Unseen’ (pol. Cichociemni) paratroopers is commemorated in Poland in February and May. In February, the commemorations centre on 15 February, the anniversary of Operation ‘Adolphus’ in 1941, when the first drop of paratroopers into the occupied country took place in the village of Dębowiec. Throughout the war, 316 of Silent and Unseen were dropped into Poland, and the unit’s final jump took place on 27 December 1944. Today’s February commemorations are both anniversary-based and educational in nature, with key events including those held at the Home Army Museum in Kraków, which bring together soldiers, veterans, schoolchildren and scouts.

Apart from the February commemorations, the memory of the Silent and Unseen is also honoured during the annual Gathering of the Silent and Unseen and Their Families, which takes place on the third Sunday in May. This date was adopted by the veterans’ community itself as early as the 1960s. These celebrations follow a well-established military protocol, including an official roll call of remembrance at the Powązki Military Cemetery in Warsaw and the laying of wreaths. A regular feature of the May gatherings is the participation of representatives from the Special Forces, in particular the GROM Military Unit, which carries on the traditions of the paratroopers. Whilst the February commemorations focus on celebrating a specific combat event, the May celebration is primarily a form of community remembrance that fosters unity. Over the decades, both these days have become an integral part of the canon of Polish military culture, helping to popularise the history of the underground soldiers amongst successive generations of citizens.

To get the coordinates, answer the following questions:

1. How many ‘Silent and Unseen’ were dropped into occupied Poland in total during the course of the war?

2. Name the operation during which the first drop of paratroopers took place in February 1941.

3. On which day in December 1944 was the last jump in the history of the Silent and Unseen carried out?

4. Name the military unit that carries on the traditions of the Silent and Unseen.

We recommend exploring the GeoTrail on foot or by bike. We strongly advise against attempting to drive the route by car, even in areas where the road is not blocked by barriers. The entire forest area is under surveillance, and driving a vehicle inside carries the risk of receiving a fine.
