#103 Święto Orderu Virtuti Militari - 11 listopada
|

#103 Virtuti Militari Day - 11 November
|
The anniversary of the Order of Virtuti Militari, Poland’s highest military decoration, has a tradition inextricably linked to key events in the country’s history. The decoration itself dates back to 22 June 1792, when King Stanisław August Poniatowski established it following the victorious Battle of Zieleńce. The first medals were awarded just a few days later, on 25 June 1792, at the Polish army camp in Ostrog.
Importantly, this decoration was not awarded exclusively to individuals. In 1920, the cities of Lviv and Verdun were added to this group, and in subsequent years, military units and warships were also honored. Warsaw was also awarded this decoration for its heroic defense in September 1939. In peacetime, the order is not currently awarded, as, according to current regulations, it may be granted only for acts of valor performed during wartime or up to five years after the end of a war. Present-day commemorations therefore focus on preserving the memory of the Order’s recipients and their achievements.
The official anniversary of the Order of Virtuti Militari was established by the Legislative Sejm by a resolution of 1 August 1919, setting the date as 3 May. Subsequently, under a new Act of 25 March 1933, the date was moved to 11 November, coinciding with National Independence Day. This date has remained unchanged in Poland's calendar of state observances.
The nature of the commemorations has evolved over the years. During the interwar period, the celebrations centred on gatherings of living veterans, whilst during the era of the Polish People’s Republic they took on a state-military character, aligned with the policies of the authorities at the time, eventually evolving into the modern state commemorative format.

We recommend exploring the GeoTrail on foot or by bike. We strongly advise against attempting to drive the route by car, even in areas where the road is not blocked by barriers. The entire forest area is under surveillance, and driving a vehicle inside carries the risk of receiving a fine.
