Geocache Description:

Set along the historic Old Beechy Rail Trail, this cache brings you to the former stop at Elliminyt. The name comes from the local Gulidjan Aboriginal word “Elliminyt,” meaning “steep rise in land surface.” In 1837, Hugh Murray arrived from Tasmania and established a vast pastoral run of about 300,000 acres between Lake Colac and the Gellibrand River, and the name has remained ever since.

Elliminyt later became a small passenger stopping place in 1928 near the Aireys Street road crossing, mainly serving nearby families. It saw only modest use, with some traffic between 1929 and 1939, before the railway line eventually closed in 1962. Today, the route lives on as the peaceful rail trail you’re standing beside.

Take your time looking around — sometimes the best finds along old rail lines reveal themselves to those who move a little slower.
