About the Location
Merredin was once a major junction for train services across the Wheatbelt was the centre of Western Australian Government Railway’s (WAGR) maintenance operations on the Eastern Goldfields Railway from 1904 to 1969. Branch lines served both northern and southern wheatbelt areas from Merredin, which opened as a booking station in 1905. The station expanded to include the cellar (1906), the signal box housing 95 levers (1913), waiting rooms with a Romanesque arch (1917) and parcels office and refreshment rooms (1923). The current station was opened in the 1970s and the old station is now a museum.
