This Event has been approved as a Maker Magic event, part of a special series highlighting creative caches. Geocachers who log “Attended” on this event will receive the official Maker Magic souvenir.
Event Description:
Wherigo Geocaches get a bad rap, at least around here. Few cachers know how to download and play the cartridges that contain the Wherigo programs, and far fewer know how to create them. It is time to do something about this injustice.
This event will be held in one of the Community Rooms in the lower level of the Brown Deer Library, 4301 W Brown Deer Rd, Brown Deer, WI.
In the hour I have rented the space for, I hope to accomplish the following:
- Teach cachers how to download and play a Wherigo cartridge on an Apple phone.
- Have a volunteer having experience with Android phones teach cachers how to download and play a Wherigo cartridge on an Android phone.
- Teach cachers a simple means to create a basic Wherigo cartridge - no programming language needed.
I already have four Wherigo caches within about three miles of the Library, and hope to have another two published shortly after the event.
PLEASE NOTE: If you want to learn how to download and play a Wherigo cartridge on your phone, please install the appropriate app (Wherigo for IOS (Apple) phones and either Geooh GO or C:GEO for Android phones) and make sure they work before the event.
If you are interested in learning how to create a simple Wherigo cartridge, feel free to bring your laptop. WIFI is free throughout the Library.
My non-caching wife and I likely will be having breakfast at a small bakery nearby before the event. Please let me know if you would like to join us.
Wherigo Information
For those who haven’t yet experienced Wherigo, the Wherigo website describes it as “a platform that allows you to build location based GPS experiences on your computer and play them in the real world.” Depending on the Wherigo cartridge (or program), you can play interactive games, take self-guided tours, or participate in a number of other experiences. And you can even find geocaches.
A Wherigo geocache involves playing a Wherigo “cartridge” (i.e., program) on an appropriate app. To find a Wherigo cache, you first will need a compatible device, either a Garmin Oregon/ Colorado or a GPS-enabled Pocket PC, Smartphone, or Tablet running an appropriate Wherigo app:
Wherigo App (iphone).
Whereyougo App (Android)
Note: I have heard there are problems running Wherigo cartridges with the Whereyougo App for Android phones, but that the Wherigo player on the Geooh Go App works much better.
