Geocache Description:

Pawnee Rock was for many years a place where Comanche, Kiowa, Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Pawnee tribes held their councils of war and peace. Many battles were fought nearby in the days before the white men came to Kansas. As a result, many bones have been found in the soil in the vicinity.
The exact half way point of the 750 mile Santa Fe Trail is located at Pawnee Rock, Kansas. From this point travelers could see Native Americans, wagon trains, and buffalo from miles away in every direction. It became a tradition to carve your name into this massive monolith of the prairie. By the 1840s it was hard to find an empty spot. The railroads and settlers began to quarry the over 150 foot tall rock formation in the 1870s and cut it down to around 50 feet high. In 1908 it was preserved as a historical site and monument erected. One of the best places to experience a sunset on the prairie.
