You can find fossilized seashells in the middle of Kansas due to the state being covered by the prehistoric Western Interior Seaway. Common fossils are oysters, shark teeth, and ancient clams. Some fossil clams found in western Kansas are up to 6 feet in diameter. The fossils, which are roughly 80 to 100 million years old, are often found in Eastern/Central Limestone/Shale and Western Kansas Chalk Beds.
