The City of Amarillo’s Rock Island Rail Trail runs for 4 miles, paralleling Plains Boulevard between Coulter Street and the intersection of 7th Avenue and Crockett Street. This 10-foot wide concrete paved trail follows the former Rock Island Line rail corridor through a mixed residential and commercial area of the city. Shade trees narrowly outnumber the street crossings. Rest areas with picnic tables as well as some benches are available along the route. Parking is unofficial, but you may find spots behind businesses off 10th Avenue at the eastern end. The trail construction complies with accessibility standards.
Wear sun protection, take caution when crossing roadways and expect traffic noise on this route. There is a half mile section east of Georgia Street that is away from busy roads with only one street crossing.
The Puzzler has returned from vacation and is not quite back into the swing of things so beware!
