Geocache Description:

Welcome to Ashley Green

Hidden among the rolling countryside of the Ashley Green, this geocache invites you to explore a quiet corner of rural England that has retained much of its historic charm. Situated in the beautiful Chiltern Hills area of Buckinghamshire, the village lies roughly halfway between the market towns of Chesham and Berkhamsted. Today it is a peaceful residential community surrounded by farmland, woodlands, and scenic countryside paths—perfect terrain for geocaching adventures.

A Village with Ancient Roots

The name Ashley Green originates from Old English and roughly translates to “ash tree clearing” or “ash field.” The name reflects the landscape that once covered this part of the Chiltern Hills, where large forests of ash trees dominated the area before agriculture transformed it into the patchwork of fields seen today.

Originally, Ashley Green was just a small hamlet within the parish of nearby Chesham. Over time the community grew, eventually becoming its own civil parish during the late 19th century as the village developed around its green, church, and local farms.

The Heart of the Village

Like many traditional English villages, Ashley Green is centered around a village green, where several historic buildings and community landmarks stand. One of the most notable is the St John the Evangelist Church, Ashley Green, which was built in 1873. The church was funded by Elizabeth Dorrien in memory of her sisters and constructed using local flint and Bath stone.

Near the church stands the village war memorial, erected in 1920 to commemorate the local men who lost their lives during the First World War. The memorial remains an important historical reminder of the impact global events have had even on small rural communities.

Community Life

Despite its modest size—fewer than a thousand residents—Ashley Green maintains a strong community spirit. The village hall and the old school building regularly host local events such as theatre rehearsals, community gatherings, and the annual village fair.

Behind the village hall lies the Glebe recreation area, which includes a playground and open space for families. The village green itself is also home to an old well and has long served as a social gathering place for residents and visitors alike.

Historic Buildings and Heritage

Several historic buildings in and around Ashley Green date back centuries. The Golden Eagle Pub, Ashley Green is believed to have operated as an inn since at least the 17th century, making it one of the oldest landmarks in the village. Some local folklore even suggests the building may be haunted!

Nearby historical sites include medieval farmsteads and the remains of a moated manor at Grove Farm, a scheduled historic monument whose earthworks still survive today. Archaeological evidence suggests that the area has been inhabited for many centuries.

A Village on the Edge of the Countryside

Ashley Green sits within the scenic Chiltern countryside, an area well known for its walking routes, farmland views, and quiet rural lanes. Over time the village has also become home to commuters traveling to London, combining traditional village life with modern accessibility.

For geocachers, this setting provides the perfect opportunity to explore hidden corners of the landscape—from winding country lanes and hedgerows to the open fields surrounding the village.
