To celebrate Geocaching Village Hall Week
16th – 22nd March 2026
High Cross Scout HQ & Community Hall is the result of a rescue project that started not long after the covid pandemic to ensure the community around High Cross in Newport, and the local Scout Group still had a place to meet, ie a village hall, after the church didn't re-open. Following significant investment by the National Lottery, the whole site has been purchased and refurbished by the Scouts on behalf of the community, re-opening the church hall as a community hall, and converting the former church building into a Scout headquarters. Most recently, following a bequest left to Newport Scouts, we have been able to build a reasonably sized climbing wall.
Having run a T5 CCE here at the end of last year, there was much demand for another - so here's another super rare opportunity - a T5 Event - in fact only the 3rd ever T5 standard event in South Wales (all the rest of mine have been CCEs).|
Come and have a go, and see if you've got a head for heights! For those not aware, I'm a qualified Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI) and have insurance through my BMC membership when acting as a volunteer. Suitable for adults and well-behaved children - we have equipment that will go down to at least age 4.
There is no fee to attend the event or sign the log book, and you don't have to climb to sign the log. If you want to climb though (and I'd really encourage you to try), please make a donation to the Scout Group to cover the costs of heating and lighting - suggested minimum donation £2.50 per person. It might be possible to set up one of the caving ladders as a challenge too.
Subject to confirmation, but tea/coffee should be available for a donation to the Scout Group too.
Huge thanks to 28th Newport Scout Group for allowing us to use their facility, and also to SamBryo for offering to help me with belaying etc.
