Kingsgrove #130 - Gipsy Lane Bridge (Officially Known as Little Bridges # 3314 - Gipsy Lane Bridge)

This is a little stone bridge at the crossing point between Crabhill Lane and Gipsy Lane, going over a stream which used to be part of the old Wilts and Berks Canal. This bridge is currently managed by the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust.

The Wilts and Berks Canal is a canal in the historic counties of Wiltshire and Berkshire, England, linking the Kennet and Avon Canal at Semington near Melksham, to the River Thames at Abingdon. The North Wilts Canal merged with it to become a branch to the Thames and Severn Canal at Latton near Cricklade. Among professional trades boatmen, the canal was nicknamed the Ippey Cut, possibly short for Chippenham.

The 52-mile (84 km) canal was opened in 1810, but abandoned in 1914 – a fate hastened by a breach at Stanley aqueduct in 1901. Much of the canal subsequently became unnavigable: many of the structures were deliberately damaged by army demolition exercises; parts of the route were filled in and in some cases built over. In 1977 the Wilts & Berks Canal Amenity Group was formed with a view to full restoration of the canal. Several locks and bridges have since been restored, and over 8 miles (13 km) of the canal have been rewatered.

About this multi-cache:

At the published coordinates, you will be standing at one end of the Gipsy Lane Bridge. Please look for a white sign which has some words on it. On the top left of the sign there is a logo, which has an insect in it. The number of letters in this insect's name is A.

At lower part of the sign there is a two-line sentence, starting with "Support...". The number of letters in the third word on the first line of this sentence is BC. And the number of letters in the last word on the second line of this sentence is D.

Finally, there is a slogan at the bottom of the sign, how many letters are there in this slogan after the "#" symbol? EF.

The final coordinates are a short distance away at:

N51 36. ( A - D )  ( B * C )  ( D + E + C )

W001 24. ( D / B + F )  ( D + B )  ( A / B * E )

You may check your answer via the following GeoChecker:

Please also note:

The bridge can be muddy and slippery after the rain, so please take care.

Please bring your own pen, and open & close the cache lid carefully so the cache and log book can survive longer.

Please also replace exactly as found due to obvious reason, and please be careful with the possible thorns and stinging nettles. Long sleeves, trousers, and gloves are recommended.

Thank you and enjoy GeoCaching!

FTF: Congratulations to arnolds11 for their FTF on 10 March 2026!

The Little Bridges series was started by Stanthews in 2009 to highlight small footbridges in remote parts of Wiltshire. Since then, the series has been expanded by others all over the country and starting to spread fast. There is a stats listing, so you can see how many Little Bridges you have found, you can find it here: - Little Bridges Geocaching Series (littlebridgesseries.co.uk). If you would like to add to the series, please go to this site, on the tab Get Involved click number request and fill in the form. To qualify, the bridge must be a foot bridge too small for vehicles, please make sure your title exactly matches “Little Bridges # xxxx then the name” including spaces so it will get picked up and added to stats list.
