The City of Amarillo’s Rock Island Rail Trail runs for 4 miles, paralleling Plains Boulevard between Coulter Street and the intersection of 7th Avenue and Crockett Street. This 10-foot wide concrete paved trail follows the former Rock Island Line rail corridor through a mixed residential and commercial area of the city. Shade trees narrowly outnumber the street crossings. Rest areas with picnic tables as well as some benches are available along the route. Parking is unofficial, but you may find spots behind businesses off 10th Avenue at the eastern end and on side streets along the west end of the trail. Be prepared to walk various distances. The trail construction complies with accessibility standards.
Wear sun protection, take caution when crossing roadways and expect traffic noise on this route. There is a half mile section east of Georgia Street that is away from busy roads with only one street crossing.
One of the AT&T transcontinental communications cables follows this railroad corridor. I was unable to find when this one was installed or its current status. If someone knows the history please send me the information, and I will share it in this description.
