Cache Across Southern California 2026

Greetings gamers! Are you ready to explore video games through the ages? Find and locate one of the roughly 50 CASC geocaches across all 10 Southern California counties. As you find geocaches, you may stamp your passport to track your progress and turn it in at Signal's Island in San Diego to redeem your prize(s)!

Do not remove the stamp from the container, it is part of this geocache!

How do I use the CASC Passport?

Use the stamp in each CASC geocache and stamp any of the 25 small game tokens on the front page of the passport. At the bottom of each coin, write the GC code of the geocache that corresponds to the stamp provided. Then on the reverse side, circle or highlight the caches you found from the list. Doing these steps will increase efficiency and line management at Signal's Island.

CASC Prize Redemption

To qualify for prize redemption you must bring your completed passport to Signal's Island Goes M*A*S*H (GCBGC72) in San Diego on Saturday, October 3rd 2026. There are two award packages being offered: Silver and Gold. For the SILVER award, you must find at least 10 CASC geocaches in 3 counties. To qualify for the GOLD award, you must find at least 25 CASC geocaches in all 10 counties. Silver award includes a small geocaching goodie bag, but Gold award includes a complimentary CASC 2026 geocoin + the silver award prize. Only one prize package per qualifying account. Prize distribution will be on a first come first served basis.

While the CASC theme for this year revolves around video games, we decided to base the theme of our cache around video game giants.  Atari was one of the earliest video game giants to revolutionize home gaming.  Founded in 1972 in Sunnyvale, California, Atari had it's first major success with the game Pong (a simple tennis game).  In 1974, Atari had it's second success with Breakout (a paddle game where you bounced a ball off the paddle to destroy the ceiling and break-out).

The first versions of Atari games were focused on actual arcade games with the 2600 home console being released and sold in 1977 with 9 games.  Even though the Atari 2600 quickly became a household name, Atari first started showing financial difficulties as early as 1982.  After the release of Centipede, Pac-Man, and Donkey Kong the market was oversaturated with video games and competitors in the market.

In 2017, the Atari video console system was redesigned bringing back to life many games from a by-gone era.  Atari discovered that the younger generation was looking to play retro video games.  While the cartridges may not be needed anymore, the storage capacity of today's computer system allows the video console system to store most of the iconic games from the early days of Atari.

The current Atari Game System Pro holds 200+ games in the internal memory at a cost of under $100.  Atari celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2022 and continues to go strong today.
