Bon Geocaching!

This cache was placed for the Mega Event âš”ïžđŸ›ĄïžđŸ° Au blason! đŸ°đŸ›Ąïžâš”ïž at Vaucelles Abbey GCB89NQ. The organizers envisioned this gathering as a convivial occasion for geocaching enthusiasts, nature lovers, heritage aficionados, and history buffs. Our aim is to allow every type of player to enjoy this hobby as they wish and to share moments of exchange and connection with others around historical sites in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region.

Ground floor and basement

The aim of this Earth Cache is to help you (re)discover soil science.

🕒 Opening hours: open to the public

🧰 Equipment: a tape measure

📌 Questions

  • 1: Which horizon is characteristic of well-developed soils?
  • 2: Approach the left-hand side of the working face and walk up the slope to reach the vegetation level. Describe the different layers you see, from top to bottom, measure their thickness and assign a horizon to each.
  • 3: Based on your observations and the description, what is the degree of soil maturity?
  • 4: A photo of yourself or an object representing you in front of the outcrop is required to validate this EarthCache.

Regional geology

The vast western plain of the CambrĂ©sis consists, at the surface, of Quaternary silts which, with the exception of the eastern slopes of the valleys, cover the entire region. These silts are designated ‘LP’.

Tertiary marine or fluvial deposits crown the higher regions or are intercalated between the Quaternary and Mesozoic strata. They are absent from the geological map extract included in this EarthCache.

The silt layer masks the underlying chalk almost everywhere. The Turonian (designated c3c and c3d) is widely exposed only on the slopes of the Scheldt valley. The Senonian (here more specifically the Coniacian and Santonian, marked c4) appears only partially in higher areas, as a result of ploughing or old small quarries opened for soil improvement or stone filling.

On the map, all the areas shown in green date from the Late Cretaceous period.

What is soil science?

‘Soil science is the science that studies the surface layers of the soil. Its aim is to analyse and describe soils using a number of predefined parameters in order to answer various questions: what is its composition, its water-holding capacity, its susceptibility to compaction, etc.’

Whilst geology focuses on the formation of the ‘subsoil’ over millions of years, pedology deals with much shorter timeframes, focusing on the current formation of soils. Pedology encompasses various disciplines such as biology, chemistry and physics.

The soil horizons

Soil is made up of several layers: the horizons. These are natural layers stacked one on top of the other, which make up a soil profile and are distinguished by their colour, texture, structure and chemical composition.

Theoretical diagram of a soil (the R horizon is not shown in this diagram)Â đŸ”œ

  • Horizon O: this is the surface organic layer consisting of leaves, plant debris and humus, and is very rich in organic matter.
  • Horizon A: this is the surface mineral horizon mixed with organic matter. This zone, characterised by high biological activity and root development, is generally dark in colour.
  • Horizon E: this horizon corresponds to leaching; it is low in clay, iron and aluminium, and is generally lighter in colour. It is also characteristic of mature soils, i.e. well-developed soils
  • Horizon B: it is characterised by the accumulation of clay, iron and aluminium oxides, and is often brown or red in colour, unlike Horizon E
  • Horizon C: this is the deep layer consisting of rock that has been little altered by pedological processes.
  • Horizon R (not shown in the diagram): this is the intact, solid parent rock located at the base of the soil profile.

Soil maturity

  • 1: Superficial weathering of the parent rock (R horizon)
  • 2: Lithosol: weathering of the parent rock (into boulders, sand, clay, silt and minerals) and gradual enrichment in organic matter (limited O, C and R horizons)
  • 3: Young soil: more extensive weathering of the parent rock and massive enrichment in organic matter by decomposers such as bacteria, fungi and invertebrates (horizons O, A, C and R)
  • 4: Mature soil: gradually, the soil thickens and becomes richer; it may have different horizons (O, A, possibly E, B, C and R horizons)
