Tak tento film znají snad všichni. Klenot kinematografie natočil režisér Karel Zeman v roce 1955 a byl inspirován ilustracemi Zdeňka Buriana. Film je kromě dobrodružné, výtvarné a trikové stránky oceňován též pro svou vysokou vzdělávací hodnotu a vědeckou korektnost (v dané době), danou zejména spoluprací tvůrců s předním českým paleontologem Josefem Augustou.
Čtveřice chlapců Petr, Jirka, Toník a Jenda se na pramici vydá proti proudu Řeky času na fantastickou výpravu do pravěku Země. Putují postupně přes mladší čtvrtohory (vč. doby ledové), dále třetihory, druhohory a prvohory až k silurskému moři (kde se setkávají s živým trilobitem). Na své objevné plavbě poznávají klima a ekosystémy v jednotlivých epochách Země, pravěká zvířata i rostlinstvo, a zažijí nejedno dobrodružství.
Exteriéry filmu byly natáčeny na slovenské řece Váh, přehradě Souš, u Strmilova na Jindřichohradecku, na zlínské přehradě a na ostrově Rujána v tehdejším východním Německu.
Zajímavost:
V roce 1966 vznikla pod názvem Journey to the Beginning of Time upravená americká verze, kterou realizoval producent William Cayton. Snímek byl nadabován do angličtiny, ale především nechal Cayton režisérem Fredem Laddem natočit odlišný úvod a závěr, vystříhat záběry na česky psaný deník a doplnit některé odborné komentáře. Nově natočené části se čtyřmi americkými dětskými herci, kteří byli zabírání pouze zezadu, se odehrávají v Americkém přírodovědném muzeu. Původní česká verze byla v USA uvedena až ve druhé polovině 60. let 20. století.
Film byl vyznamenán na Mezinárodním festivalu v Benátkách a v Mannheimu roku 1959, prodal se do 72 zemí. Film měl velký úspěch v zahraničí, především v NDR, USA a Japonsku. Jenom v New Yorku ho promítalo 96 kin najednou, to se žádnému tuzemskému režisérovi před tím ani po tom už nepodařilo.
O snímku se zmínil i Steven Spielberg, řekl že jeho kvalita je vzhledem k době vzniku neuvěřitelná. V jeho filmu Jurský park také můžeme vidět velmi podobnou scénu, kdy ohledávání nemocného dinosaura rodu Triceratops mělo za cíl dostat protagonisty co nejblíže k dinosaurovi na plátně.
Místo keše nám vzdáleně připomínalo právě scény z Cesty do pravěku. Proto jsme jako vzpomínku zvolili toto téma.

This movie is most likely known to everyone. A real gem of cinematography was made by director Karel Zeman in 1955 and was inspired by illustrations by Zdeněk Burian. In addition to its adventurous, artistic and trick aspects, the film is also appreciated for its high educational value and scientific correctness (at the time), given in particular by the collaboration of the creators with the leading Czech paleontologist Josef Augusta.
Four boys, Petr, Jirka, Tonik and Jenda, set off on a boat upstream on the River of Time on a fantastic journey into the prehistory of the Earth. They gradually travel through the younger Quaternary (including the Ice Age), then the Tertiary, Mesozoic and Paleozoic to the Silurian Sea (where they encounter a living trilobite). On their voyage of discovery, they learn about the climate and ecosystems in each era of the Earth, prehistoric animals and plants, and experience many adventures.
The exteriors of the film were filmed on the Slovak Rive Vah, the Dam Sous, near Strmilov in the Jindrichuv Hradec region, the Dam at Zlin, and on the island of Rügen in what was then East Germany.
Fun fact:
In 1966, an adapted American version was made under the title Journey to the Beginning of Time, and was made by producer William Cayton. The film was dubbed into English, but most importantly, Cayton had director Fred Ladd film a different introduction and conclusion, cut out footage of the diary written in Czech, and add some expert commentary. The newly filmed parts with four American child actors, who were shot only from behind, take place in the American Museum of Natural History. The original Czech version was not released in the USA until the second half of the 1960s.
The film was awarded at the International Festival in Venice and Mannheim in 1959, and was sold to 72 countries. The film was a great success abroad, especially in the East Germany, the USA and Japan. In New York alone, it was screened in 96 cinemas at the same time, something no domestic director had managed to do before or since.
Steven Spielberg also mentioned the film, saying that its quality is incredible considering the time it was made. In his film Jurassic Park, we can also see a very similar scene, where the examination of a sick Triceratops dinosaur was aimed at getting the protagonists as close to the dinosaur on screen as possible.
