Geocache Description:

The hamlet of Arena Metato arose in the early Middle Ages and was owned by the Crown of Italy.

The first mention of the village of Arena appears in a document from the Lucca archiepiscopal archives dating back to 724.

This document indicates that the territory was owned by various Pisan Lombard families, and that the court of Arena itself was donated to a nobleman from Lucca, the father of Archbishop Peredeo, by the King of the Lombards. In a 1051 charter by Henry III, the court of Arena and the church of San Jacopo a Cafaggiareggi were confirmed as belonging to the Abbey of Sant'Antimo in Val d'Orcia. Metato is recorded for the presence of agricultural fields in the diplomas of July 1, 933, and March 26, 941. In Metato, a deed was signed on October 11, 1116, for the sale of the castle and the district of Bientina by Rabodo, Margrave of Tuscany, to the Opera della Primaziale of Pisa. In the Middle Ages, the hamlet had three parish churches: the parish church of Arena and the churches of San Cassiano in Metato and San Jacopo in Cafaggiareggi.

By 1551, the villages were depopulated, and only from the 18th century onward did the population increase. In 1833, the village of Metato had 415 inhabitants, while that of Arena had 575.

In 1939, over 100 hectares of fertile land, located between the Serchio River, the Via Aurelia, and the road to Metato, were requisitioned for the use of the Royal Air Force. In March 1943, the first squadrons arrived and facilities for the various services were built, but flight operations were hampered by the field's small size.

The importance of this small airfield grew as events unfolded, and it served as a base for numerous operations. After the armistice, the field was occupied by the German Luftwaffe, who requisitioned aircraft, weapons, and equipment. As the front approached, the airfield was bombed by the Allies and abandoned by the retreating Germans.

Toward the end of World War II, a U.S. Army prisoner-of-war camp was set up here, where the poet Ezra Pound was also held in the summer of 1945.

After the dissolution of the Disciplinary Training Center, the American barracks were used to house Istrian refugees.

In recent decades the hamlet has increased its population (currently just over 4,000 inhabitants) and the two historic centers (Arena and Metato) are united in a single urban area.
