Redoubt
The reconstructed redoubt marks the general location of a historic redoubt that was built by George Washington’s Continental Army during their Whitemarsh Encampment of November 2 - Dec 11, 1777.
A redoubt is part of a larger fort system. It is an enclosed defensive structure often constructed of mounded earth or stone or brick. This redoubt was a temporary structure on the western end of the Continental troop positions. Fort Hill is one of the sites from which the Continental troops defended against the British encroaching from Philadelphia.
Knowing his poorly clad men needed better quarters, and also to protect the iron forges and foundries in the Schuylkill Valley Washington marched his troops from Fort Hill to Valley Forge for the historic 1777-78 winter encampment.
