I can see the pub from here #308 - Honingham
This is the 308th in the series of caches set out to celebrate that wonderful Great British establishment, the pub.
Our pub is situated on the Street in Honingham and, when opened in the 18th century, would have been on the main Norwich to King’s Lynn road and the pub, at that time, was known by the name of the Bell. In 1792 it changed its name to * name of pub * after John * name of pub * who, as well as earning his living as a blacksmith, was a well known smuggler who, in October 1792 was apprehended with a tub of illicit gin at his house. Apparently he was a Notorious Smuggler and is mentioned in Parson Woodforde's diaries , he no doubt, provided many a country pub with some competitively priced supplies.
Initially, it would have been a privately owned freehouse before eventually being purchased by a Norwich brewer .It remained tied to this brewery until the brewery take-over by W***** M*** in the 1960s. W***** M**** kept the pub trading before, like the other pubs it owned, it was passed into the ownership of a company who were more interested in making a profit than keeping licensees and customers satisfied.

In 2014 it was closed and sold-off but, unlike many similar pubs that have found theirselves in the same position and have ended up being bought by developers, our pub was bought to be re-opened as a pub and, as a blast from the past, its new owner was a brewery. So since 2015 our pub has once more become a tied house and now displays the mark of the resurrected brewery of Great Yarmouth.

Peter Mellor advises that the rent in 1966 was £50.00 per annum.
Following extensive renovations by the brewery in 1968
it rose to £200.00 per annum.
