A Serra do Freixoeirinho e a Capela de Santo António: História, Devoção e Paisagem
1. Enquadramento Geográfico e Simbólico
No alto da Serra do Freixoeirinho, a 545 metros de altitude, também conhecida como Serra de Santo António ou simplesmente Serra do Santo, ergue‑se um dos locais mais singulares do território que hoje pertence à freguesia de Cardigos. A sua posição elevada oferece ao visitante uma visão ampla e quase celestial sobre a região circundante, fazendo deste ponto um dos miradouros naturais mais imponentes da zona.
É neste cenário que se encontra uma pequena ermida dedicada a Santo António, herdeira de séculos de devoção popular e profundamente ligada à memória religiosa das comunidades vizinhas.
2. Origens da Devoção: A Capela de Santo Antão e Santo António
Desde o século XVIII existem referências a um pequeno e pobre templo com invocação a Santo Antão. Esta capela, dependente da Igreja Matriz da Amêndoa, situava-se em território da antiga freguesia da Amêndoa e constituía uma presença espiritual significativa para as populações locais.
Com o passar dos anos, e por vontade expressa do povo, decidiu-se acrescentar à evocação inicial a figura de Santo António. Assim, passaram a coexistir duas imagens na mesma capela:
- a de Santo Antão, mais antiga, esculpida em pedra;
- a de Santo António, mais recente, talhada em madeira.
A capela passou então a ser conhecida como templo de Santo Antão e Santo António, reforçando a dupla devoção que marcava o viver religioso das aldeias envolventes.
3. Declínio, Abandono e Demolição (século XIX)
Os registos de 1845 revelam o estado de completo abandono em que o edifício se encontrava. As portas haviam desaparecido, as imagens apresentavam sinais profundos de degradação e o espaço já não possuía condições mínimas para acolher qualquer tipo de celebração religiosa.
Face a esta situação, as autoridades eclesiásticas e civis decidiram ordenar a demolição da antiga capela. Esta resolução foi antecedida pela construção de um novo edifício na localidade dos Martinzes, destinado a receber tanto as cerimónias religiosas como as imagens dos santos, depois de devidamente restauradas.
4. Renascimento da Devoção: A Nova Capela (1992–1995)
A memória da antiga capela e o valor simbólico da serra permaneceram vivos entre as populações. Em 1992, a criação de uma Associação que congregava habitantes de várias povoações — Freixoeiro, Freixoeirinho, Cabo, Robalo, Monte Fundeiro, Gargantada, Martinzes, Arganil, Moita Ricóme, Mesão Frio e Sarnadas, pertencentes às freguesias de Cardigos e Amêndoa — marcou o início de uma nova fase de dinamização e revitalização deste local.
Em 1995, por iniciativa da Direção dessa Associação e graças à união de esforços e à boa vontade das comunidades locais, foi erguida uma nova capela dedicada exclusivamente a Santo António, agora já em território da freguesia de Cardigos.
Entre os nomes que se destacaram pelo empenho e trabalho persistente encontram‑se:
- Henrique Dias Santos (Freixoeiro)
- Luís Filipe Résio (Cabo)
- Luís Miguel Résio (Gargantada)
- António Farinha, “Meirim” (Sarnadas)
- António Manuel Caetano (Arganil)
Foram, entre outros, figuras determinantes para devolver à serra o seu símbolo de fé.
A capela reconstruída passou a albergar no seu centro a imagem de Santo António, reafirmando o lugar do santo português mais universal na espiritualidade local.
5. Vestígios do Passado e Presença do Presente
Um pouco a sul da nova construção ainda hoje se podem observar os vestígios da antiga capela de Santo Antão e Santo António, silenciosos testemunhos de séculos de devoção, esforço comunitário, abandono e renascimento.
Estes restos materiais servem como memória tangível de um longo percurso religioso e cultural, perpetuando o elo entre a antiga tradição e a continuidade da fé.
6. A Experiência Contemporânea: Um Lugar Entre Céu e Terra
A nova capela da Serra do Freixoeirinho, integrada na paisagem imponente e tranquila do alto da serra, oferece ao visitante momentos de contemplação e recolhimento. A combinação entre espiritualidade, natureza e história transforma este espaço num ponto privilegiado da freguesia de Cardigos.

1. Geographical and Symbolic Framework
At the top of the Serra do Freixoeirinho, at an altitude of 545 metres, also known as the Serra de Santo António or simply Serra do Santo, stands one of the most remarkable sites within the territory that now belongs to the parish of Cardigos. Its elevated position offers visitors a broad and almost celestial view over the surrounding region, making this point one of the most impressive natural viewpoints in the area.
It is in this setting that a small hermitage dedicated to Saint Anthony is found, heir to centuries of popular devotion and deeply connected to the religious memory of the neighbouring communities.
2. Origins of Devotion: The Chapel of Saint Antão and Saint Anthony
Since the eighteenth century, references exist to a small and humble temple dedicated to Saint Antão. This chapel, dependent on the Mother Church of Amêndoa, stood within the territory of the former parish of Amêndoa and served as a significant spiritual presence for the local populations.
Over the years, and by the express will of the people, the figure of Saint Anthony was added to the initial dedication. Thus, two images came to coexist in the same chapel:
- that of Saint Antão, older and carved in stone;
- and that of Saint Anthony, more recent and carved in wood.
The chapel then became known as the temple of Saint Antão and Saint Anthony, reinforcing the dual devotion that shaped the religious life of the surrounding villages.
3. Decline, Abandonment and Demolition (19th Century)
Records from 1845 reveal the state of complete abandonment in which the building was found. The doors had disappeared, the images showed serious signs of deterioration, and the space no longer offered the minimum conditions for any kind of religious celebration.
In view of this situation, the ecclesiastical and civil authorities decided to order the demolition of the old chapel. This decision was preceded by the construction of a new building in the locality of Martinzes, intended to host both the religious ceremonies and the saints' images, once these were restored.
4. Rebirth of Devotion: The New Chapel (1992–1995)
The memory of the old chapel and the symbolic value of the mountain remained alive among the people. In 1992, the creation of an Association bringing together inhabitants of several villages — Freixoeiro, Freixoeirinho, Cabo, Robalo, Monte Fundeiro, Gargantada, Martinzes, Arganil, Moita Ricóme, Mesão Frio and Sarnadas, belonging to the parishes of Cardigos and Amêndoa — marked the beginning of a new phase of revitalisation of this site.
In 1995, through the initiative of the Association’s Board and thanks to the combined efforts and goodwill of the local communities, a new chapel dedicated exclusively to Saint Anthony was built, now within the territory of the parish of Cardigos.
Among those who stood out for their dedication and persistent work were:

These and others, directly or indirectly, contributed to restoring to the mountain its emblem of faith. The rebuilt chapel came to house at its centre the image of Saint Anthony, reaffirming the place of the most universally known Portuguese saint in local spirituality.
5. Vestiges of the Past and the Presence of the Present
A little to the south of the new construction, the remains of the old chapel of Saint Antão and Saint Anthony can still be seen today, silent witnesses to centuries of devotion, communal effort, abandonment and rebirth.
These material remnants serve as tangible memories of a long religious and cultural journey, preserving the link between ancient tradition and the continuity of faith.
6. The Contemporary Experience: A Place Between Heaven and Earth
The new chapel of the Serra do Freixoeirinho, set within the imposing and tranquil landscape of the mountain summit, offers visitors moments of contemplation and reflection. The combination of spirituality, nature and history transforms this site into one of the privileged viewpoints of the parish of Cardigos.
As our greatest poet wrote in The Lusiads:
“It is better to experience than to judge, but let judge those who cannot experience.”
The phrase is perfectly suited to this place, whose beauty, atmosphere and meaning can only be fully understood by those who climb to its heights and contemplate the unbounded horizon.
