On this date in 1917, Earl Mitchell invented the MoonPie in Chattanooga, Tennessee. After 109 years, this tasty confection is still being made by the Chattanooga Bakery. Considered to some to be the epitome in nutrition, this is one of the few foods on the market which contains the Minimum Daily Requirement (MDR) for selenium. While New Yorkers may consider a bagel and Starbucks to be the ideal breakfast, generations of Southerners have relied on the MoonPie and RC Cola to be the "Breakfast of Champions." An recent unpublished study by the Internal Revenue Service found that taxpayers consuming a MoonPie and cola drink while preparing their income tax returns made fewer mistakes on their tax returns and had larger tax refunds.
This month Moonstruck Monday celebrates MoonPies. We will meet at Wegman's in Chantilly to share our geocaching experiences. Everyone is welcome. Be sure to bring your appetite, your geocaching tales, and trackables to share. The first dozen geocachers to arrive at this event will receive a free MoonPie.
