You’ve discovered another stop in the North Carolina Hidden Gems GeoTour. These geocaches are placed alongside some of the most real, rare, offbeat, and odd destinations in NC. Locate at least 10 of these GeoTour caches, record each code word, and submit the Hidden Gems passport for a custom collectible coin! Find them all and earn a special souvenir!
About this specific location
Start at the public beach access at West 40th Street in Sunset Beach. Walk onto the beach and turn southwest, away from the pier. From there, it is about 1.5 miles to Bird Island. You can walk or ride a bike, but shoes are a smart choice.
Keep going until you see the American flag. The mailbox is a little hidden, but you can see it from the beach. If you reach the jetty, you have gone a little too far.
Inside the mailbox, you’ll find notebooks filled with sentimental notes from past visitors. This is what inspired Nicolas Sparks to include Kindred Spirit Mailbox in his 2018 book, "Every Breath". To log this Virtual cache, please upload a photo of yourself or a personal item (your face is not required) with the mailbox in the background and while you’re there, we encourage you to leave a special message of your own. The code word for this cache is the first word on the plaque attached to the driftwood.
