As i was hiding this, a train went through blasting its horns. Was very cool as you'll see when you find this cache. I hope it lasts. Please pay attention to how you find it so you can replace it exactly as so or it won't last long. Cheers

The railroad is actually a big part of why The Plains even became what it is today.

Back in the mid-1800s, the town wasn’t originally called The Plains—it was known as “White Plains.” Everything changed when the Manassas Gap Railroad came through. That rail line was built to connect the Shenandoah Valley to eastern markets, and when it reached this area, it put the town on the map.

A depot was built, and suddenly this quiet rural stop became a hub. Farmers could ship crops, livestock, and goods much faster than before. What used to take days by wagon could now move in hours. The town started to grow around that access—stores, homes, and businesses followed the tracks.

During the American Civil War, the railroad became even more important. Rail lines like this were critical for moving troops and supplies, which also made them targets. The Manassas Gap line changed hands and was damaged multiple times throughout the war, reflecting how strategic it was.

After the war, the line was rebuilt and eventually became part of larger rail systems over time (what you’d now associate with lines like those operated by Norfolk and Western Railway and later Norfolk Southern Railway).

Today, trains still pass through The Plains, and if you’re nearby, you’ll hear them before you see them. It’s one of those things that ties the present back to the past—the same path, the same purpose, just modernized.
