[Fr]   Un peu d’histoire :

[En]  A little history

Pierre Victor Galtier is a great figure of Langogne, not to say THE most illustrious character of our small Lozérien village.

Veterinary graduate, he is the first to have developed a vaccine against rabies (for laboratory animals) at Lyon School with convincing experimental results.

I propose for the resolution of this cache to dive into the history of this exceptional man who made Professor Pierre Lépine say : " We too often forget that it is Galtier, who has through his work, charted the magnificent path that led to one of the greatest triumphs of medical science" … and he added : "It is not enough that his name be saved from oblivion, I am particularly grateful to Jean Théodoridès for having devoted an entire chapter to the work of Galtier.544

Dedicated to an international reputation, the destiny of Pierre Victor Galtier, already struck by the disappearance of four of his eight children as well as that of his wife, unfortunately decided otherwise with a foretold Nobel Prize since he died in 1908, just before the award of the famous prize which can only be awarded during the lifetime of the recipients.

René Delorme, an inhabitant of our territory, has not stopped to restore a bit of historical truth with a very documented book in 1999 entitled "In those days, rage ! A Langonnais in the race for the vaccine"; this book is available at the city library as well as at the departmental archives in Mende.

Finally, the municipality, under the impetus of the Association of Friends of Heritage, recently erected a stele in his honor and created an annual scholarship rewarding a brilliant student from Langon; a monument that you will have to discover outside the walls of the small tour of the town.
