Newbury #149 - Newbury War Memorial (Officially Known as War Memorial # 2624 ~ Newbury Memorial Cross)

The Newbury War Memorial (also known as Newbury Memorial Cross) stands outside St Nicholas Church in Bartholomew Street, Newbury. The memorial stands on a four stepped, octagonal base, surmounted by plinth, shaft and lantern cross. The names and the Inscription are held on bronze panels mounted on a curved wall behind the cross. The front is enclosed with metal railings with a single gate in it. The memorial was first unveiled 1 October 1922. There are 339 names for World War 1 and 171 for World War 2. The names have been sorted into alphabetical order here for ease of reading and research.

About this Multi-cache:

At the published coordinates, you will be standing outside of the Newbury War Memorial. There are many bronze panels mounted on a curved wall behind the cross. How many panels are there in total? Let it be AB.

On the metal railings surrounding the war memorial, there is a sign from Newbury Town Council, which has several lines of words on it. The number of letters in the second word on the top line is C. The number of letters in the last word on the 4th line is D. And the number of letters in the only word on the bottom line is E.

The final coordinates are some distance away at:

N51 ( A + B )  ( D / A )  .  ( E - C )  ( C - B )  ( A + C )

W001 ( D / E )  ( D + B )  .  ( B + C )  ( E + ( E / D ) )  ( A - B )

Please also note:

Please bring your own pen, and open & close the cache lid carefully so the cache and log book can survive longer. You might need a tweezer to help retrieve the log paper.

Please also replace exactly as found due to obvious reason, and please be careful with the possible thorns, stinging nettles, and overhead tree branches! Long sleeves, trousers, and gloves are recommended.

Thank you and enjoy GeoCaching!

FTF: Congratulations to sheep! for their FTF on 30 March 2026!
