About SideTracked Caches

This cache belongs to the SideTracked series. It is not designed to take you to a magical place with a breath taking view. It's a distraction for the weary traveller, but anyone else can go and find it too. More information can be found at the SideTracked Website.

Ditton

Ditton railway station, originally Ditton Junction, opened in 1871 on the London-Liverpool line.

On 17 September 1912, 15 people were killed when the 17:30 train from Chester derailed while crossing from the fast to the slow line at speed.

The station was rebuilt between 1960-61 at a cost of £48,500. Ditton closed to passengers on 29 May 1994 and the station buildings were demolished in 2005.

Despite having been closed to passengers for 5 years, Ditton was ranked as the least used station in Great Britain for the 1999/2000 period. This happened because someone, somehow, purchased a ticket to and from the station, causing it to be included in the statistics.

Today, the platforms survive and can easily be seen from passing trains, and the site of the station buildings is visible from the road, marked by the more modern brickwork of the bridge parapet.
