Welcome to Appledore railway station, a quiet reminder of North Devon’s railway past.
Mounted on the old station wall is a beautifully crafted sign depicting the wheels of a steam train, along with the name of the station and the years it operated. This artwork captures the spirit of a time when this very spot was part of a circular railway linking Appledore, Westward Ho!, and Bideford.
Opened in the early 1900s, the line carried both locals and seaside visitors before eventually closing in the mid-20th century. Today, the trains are gone, but pieces like this sign keep the history alive—if you take a moment to look closely, you can almost hear the rhythm of the wheels it represents.
