Geocache Description:

🌍 Bent, Broken, and Banded: A Rock’s Story

🔹 Welcome

Welcome to Bent, Broken abd Banded Earthcache! Please read logging requirements as set out below in order to log a find. Please send me an email with the required information, and do not post any answers in your log. Pictures are always encouraged, however, be sure that they do not give away any of the answers!

At first glance, this rock may just look like a large decorative stone—but take a closer look.

You’ll notice lines, curves, and cracks that tell a much deeper story.

This rock has not always looked the way it does today. It has been changed, bent, and broken over time by powerful forces deep within the Earth and at its surface.

This EarthCache invites you to slow down, observe carefully, and uncover the clues hidden in the rock.

🔹 Learning Section

Some rocks form deep underground from molten material and are called igneous rocks. However, these rocks don’t always stay the same.

When rocks are exposed to intense heat and pressure, they can change into a new type of rock called a metamorphic rock.

🔹 Banding (Layers in the Rock)

During metamorphism:

  • minerals can separate into light and dark bands
  • these bands may appear straight, wavy, or folded

This type of rock is often called gneiss.

🔹 Folding (Rock Under Pressure)

If pressure continues:

  • the bands can become bent or folded
  • this shows the rock was compressed after it formed

🔹 Cracks and Fractures

After the rock forms and is later exposed:

  • it may develop cracks (fractures)
  • these cracks can cut across the bands

👉 When a feature cuts across another, it formed after the original structure.

🔹 Weathering

At the Earth’s surface:

  • wind, water, and temperature changes slowly break down rock
  • this is called weathering

It can make surfaces:

  • rougher
  • darker in places
  • or more worn

🔹 Key Idea

👉 This rock shows multiple stages of change:

  • formation
  • metamorphism (banding)
  • deformation (folding)
  • breaking (cracks)
  • surface change (weathering)

🔎 Questions

In order to log this earthcache, please email me the answers to the following questions using the information that you find on the cache page, and at the phsyical site.

  1. Do you see light and dark bands in the rock, and are they straight or curved?
  2. Based on the learning section, what process caused these bands to form?
  3. Do the bands appear straight or folded, and what does this tell you about what happened to the rock after it formed?
  4. Do you see any cracks, and do they follow the bands or cut across them?
  5. Based on your observation, did the cracks form before or after the bands? Briefly explain.
  6. What visible feature shows that this rock has been changed over time?
  7. MANDATORY: Post a picture of you or a personal item with the rock in the background OR with the nearby statue titled "Spirit of Youth" in the background (either is fine)
