As America celebrates the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution we are refreshing some of the "American Revolution Geo Trail” cache located at historic sites across New Jersey.
Start your journey or revisit these historic locations to learn about the endurance, perseverance and bravery of the American patriots who fought in the War for Independence.
On January 3, 1777, General George Washington personally led a daring counterattack at the Battle of Princeton, rallying fleeing American troops and driving back British regulars. Riding within 30 yards of the British line, his courageous action broke the enemy line, secured a vital victory after Trenton, and turned the tide of the Revolutionary War.
After American Brigadier General Hugh Mercer was mortally wounded, his troops began to retreat in disorder before British bayonet charges. Washington's Leadership seeing the retreat rode to the front lines risking his life to rally the troops and reform the line.
Washington rallied his men with the shout, "Parade with us my brave fellows! There is but a handful of the enemy and we shall have them directly!".
This rejuvenated American troops, drove the British Regiment from the field, which turned the battle into a rout, resulting in a significant American victory.
This victory over British regulars at Princeton, combined with the victory at Trenton, boosted American morale, increased enlistments, and forced the British to abandon much of New Jersey.
The engagement is widely considered one of Washington's finest moments, showcasing his courage and personal leadership.
