A Verbali trap (also known as a padded pole trap) is a specialized device used primarily to capture raptors such as hawks, owls, and small falcons. Unlike portable ground-based traps, it is mounted on top of a pole or post that mimics a natural hunting perch. The trap typically consists of a modified foothold trap with its jaws heavily padded using rubber or tape to minimize injury to the bird’s legs. A trigger or pressure-sensitive mechanism is incorporated so that when a raptor lands on the perch to survey for prey, its weight activates the trap, closing the jaws gently around one or both legs.
The entire trap assembly is attached to a slide or tether system on the pole which allows the captured bird to slide or descend safely to the ground rather than dangling in the air, reducing stress and the risk of injury. Pole traps require no live bait or lure as the elevated perch itself serves as the attractant in areas where natural perches are scarce, such as open marshes or agricultural fields. This type of trap does carry a higher potential for injury if not properly used and monitored by experienced personnel. In many regions, their use is illegal or limited to wildlife management or research with proper permits.
